Florida Low Country Shrimp Boil

Here’s what I consider the best Florida Low Country Boil ….I stick with this recipe, and it’s awesome every time.

  • About 10-12 small red skinned potatoes
  • 6 ears of corn
  • Water to Cover (I use a huge Stock Pot)
  • 1-2 Bay Leaves
  • 2 Teaspoons of Old Bay Seasoning per quart of water ( I use this liberally)
  • 1/2 tsp. Cayenne Pepper (optional)
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 ½ lbs of Shrimp, Raw, UNPEELED!!!!
  • Crab Legs, about 2 lbs. (We buy pre-cooked frozen up here, because there’s no good fresh crab)
  • Lemons (One for every person eating)
  • 2-3 Sticks of Melted Butter

Halve potatoes, don’t peel them!
Cut corn into four inch pieces.
Pour enough water over to cover ingredients in Large Pot.

  1. Add bay leaves and Old Bay Seasonings, cayenne pepper and garlic cloves. Bring to a Boil.
  2. Add potatoes and boil boil for 20 minutes.
  3. Add corn and crab legs, cook for 10 minutes more.
  4. Add Shrimp at the end and boil for 3-5 minutes more. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp! It’s ready as soon as it turns pink/red. Drain.

We usually dump ours out on a Picnic Table covered in newspaper, or one of those plastic cheesecloth tablecloths. Serve with Beer and fresh Bread.

(Oh, and if you want to make it “Frogmore Stew”…you simply add kielbasa (2 packages) and cut that up along with the corn, in half or in 4 inch pieces, and add them at the beginning with the potatoes.)

And, if you want to make it “special”, throw in a couple Lobsters along with the crab….we do that often!

Bon Appetit, Ya’ll !
