“Few things in nature can compare to the long, mournful wail of a loon echoing across water and through the forest. It’s an evocative sound that will stick with you for the rest of your life and make you nostalgic for things that never even happened to you.”

You can match the notes of a loon’s call with an alto recorder. We used to have a cabin on a lake with loons and the strange call from the recorder would get the male loons quite excited.

I had that exact experience – alone on a hillside at night, above a river, under a bright moon with loons calling in the distance and a couple of wolves, to add to the chorus. . I can tell you, that’s the closest I would ever get to heaven on earth
