not so random thoughts on social media
I first came to Google+ at my brother’s suggestion. At the time my daughter, a budding photographer followed our lead…the image below taken at Navy Pier was one of her first posts.
After a few months of dealing with online stalkers and internet assholes she decided it wasn’t worth it and left to pursue other things she found worthwhile. I miss her presence here but I understand the reasons behind her choice. Many times I’ve thought of doing the same. I actually did leave and close my account earlier this year, (and the year before that, and maybe even another time) to take a hiatus and to try and gain fresh perspective upon my return.
The Internet is a hostile place at times… you are accepted and then criticized. … you are praised and then ridiculed…. you are often judged, misjudged, and sometimes completely misunderstood…you have good days and you have bad days.
When I feel good I let people know about it ….when I’m feeling bad or suffering a loss I tend to keep to myself. My style on posts can be just as individual and simple or complicated as I am. My mother taught me if I didn’t have anything nice to say I shouldn’t say anything at all …I’m still following that advice the best I can…but trust me, I don’t always keep my mouth (or keyboard) shut when I should. My purpose for being here is to simply share my stories, make positive connections, share some laughs and hopefully help encourage others who may be going through particularly difficult times.
That’s me. Take it or leave it.

This post rings with so much truth.

The only thing I can say is :: ditto ::
btw …. screaming like a lunatic is a big part of how one enjoys a roller-coasters ride. 🙂

I love this
We have slightly differing styles, but we are similar so many other ways – I share my ups mostly, but my ‘very strong’ downs, I share them too, as I find the people on here, my friends, help, sooth, and even somethings solve my difficulties
I love G, and all of you

Dear Bobbie and dear unknown Bobbie’s daughter _Zendottir_ (?)… I do not believe that GPlus has to be like this. I do know it has been like this for you and many others. I’m sorry about that.
a: because it hurts you
b: because it lets assholes intimidate and silence good voices
c: because in my selfish opinion it makes the place quieter and more boring everytime this happens.
If anyone can make a place decent for people to exchange thoughts then I believe it is Google. They just need to wake up.

People can be amazingly rude in social media. Funny thing is many of them are shy, reserved, timid, and fearful in real life. I’ve been known to ask a few ass-hats to meet me for coffee etc. over the years. I’ve had no takers and it usually shuts them up (toward me at least).

BobbieZen I am here for many of the reasons you are. Mostly, social media has been good to me. There have been some bumps as you know, but so far, breaks help me to gain perspective on those things.
You are among those that make me glad I found this particular social media. Genuine is hard enough to find IRL, and just as hard in some platforms.

Great post. It’s easy to get soured by the negativity online. There sure can be a lot of it. We shall overcome! 🙌

I was relatively naive about social media when I came on board several years ago, but I’ve learned a lot. I remember my guilt at blocking my very first person, but then I realized I don’t have to accept behavior here that I wouldn’t tolerate in real life. So you’re rude and abusive, you’re gone. As a consequence I’ve created — little by little — a community of civil, polite people it’s a pleasure to communicate with. Yes, I have my non-communicative periods, but my circles are just fine with that. I’m grateful for their support and wisdom and humor.

Yes, to all you have said!! And I can see from some of my women friends how hostile it can be – not because all men are bad (which some believe) but because there is a vocal element of bad men out there (and some women too, I might add). I’ve considered that the internet is not all that different from RL, as we like to make that division. But it is so public that it opens us all to the possibility of meeting creeps – both male and female!! I’ve waffled all over the place with being here, but it is a place where I can self-express and interact with others. And for the most part, my goal is to share beauty and kindness (although I will admit I sometimes get carried away with some of my wilder friends on here! LOL). Sorry to go on, BobbieZen! Your thoughts triggered my thoughts!! LOL 😛

I’ve found an equal amount of female/male, it’s not a gender thing at all…it’s just a human thing. Sadly, may started out as trusted ‘friends’, because I’m trusting like that…then became caustic and toxic to my well being. Living and Learning…that’s what it’s all about. And boy, have I LEARNED. 🙂
