America’s Dairyland

Wisconsin has a nickname. You’ve seen it on license plates: America’s Dairyland. And in Milwaukee, you may have heard this moniker: Cream City.
Why was Milwaukee once referred to as Cream City? The answer might surprise you. It has nothing to do with the dairy industry.
“Milwaukee’s known as the Cream City because of the yellow, cream-colored bricks that were first discovered and made here in the 19th century,” says Historic Milwaukee tour and membership coordinator, Josh Ballew. “Those bricks were used for many of the buildings and businesses — breweries, schools — throughout the 19th century.”

Living on the border, we call it “Packer Country” or “Enemy Territory.” I don’t remember the rivalry being this intense when I lived up in the prairie land of Owatonna and Faribault.

Jake Kern I always find the territorial mindsets fascinating… Naturally everyone thinks that they hail from the better place. 🙂 I for one am looking forward to becoming a Full-time Yooper some day!

BobbieZen, we “hate” Wisconsin the same way we “hate” an annoying sibling. That said, I’d never stop for gas in Juneau County or Adams County.
As for Yoopers, I remember a couple fantastic ski trips we had at Big Powderhorn. Beautiful country.
