On a drive out in the country last night we happened upon these gorgeous creatures, a family of Sandhill Cranes. Their beautiful and distinctive call was what first alerted us they were near, then we saw the babies darting out on the side of the road…Mother and Father were quickly by their sides ushering them back to safety, but not before I grabbed my camera from the backseat and tried, hurriedly, to capture some photos. Not completely focused, but I’m so happy I was able to see them up close!
Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) is one of only 15 species of cranes in the world and is one of just two crane species native to North America. Standing 4-5 feet tall they have a wingspan of 6-7 feet.
