When I went down to the kitchen to start my coffee, I was startled by a baby opossum who’s taken up residence under my deck. He/she was eating the birdseed that was scattered from the feeder above.
They used to give me the heebie-jeebies…maybe its that long hairless tail that gives me the shudders… but I’m thinking this little one is especially cute. Snapped him with my cell-phone out the kitchen window before he scooted off in search of more grub.
Have a great day, all!
I have a few dogs that can take care of him for you 😉

I remember, a lifetime ago, sitting out by the pool, in the still of a warm summer night, listening to music and contemplating life, love, and lawn care. I hadn’t moved for quite some time so the opossum simply walked up beside me and stopped inches from my feet, scoping out the backyard. I didn’t move and watched him until he eventually wandered off into the shadows.

Funny how a picture evokes memories… I remember my grandmother and I finding a dead opossum in her backyard back when I was about five or six years old… so granny went and got the shovel dug a deep hole and we buried him and had a little ceremony. I also remember going out into the backyard the next morning to find that he had dug his way out of his grave… and that’s when I learned what playing ‘possum was really all about!

We have some around here. Haven’t seen them in a while, but did watch a mama and her babies walk along the fence one night. I like them but have to make sure none are in the yard when I let Blue out. POUNCE!

It is not unusual to see possums around here. We often see them on our porch!

About a month after that incident, I discovered that that very same opossum (or its twin) had crawled into a partly rainwater-filled garbage can that I had placed at the side of the house. Apparently, opossums can’t tread water for more than a few hours. A day, tops. He was rather unceremoniously hurled into the forest.
#RIP opossum
PS. He was pretty stiff but I can’t guarantee that a necromancer squirrel didn’t revive him.

Not long after we had moved into our house, SD kept finding little bits of poop in the garage…he blamed my sweet dachshund Maggie Mae, and we left it at that. Then, one day I was walking by a large paper yard bag filled with leaves and sticks and plant cuttings and it starting moving and shifting around…So, naturally, I screamed, headed for the kitchen door, and then slammed it shut on David, leaving him to contend with whatever was in there alone in the garage.
LOL He likes to remind me about that from time to time.
Sure enough it was a opossum that found itself deep inside the bag and couldn’t get out….so he and the neighbor carried it out and released him down by the lake…at which point the opossum ran straight back toward the garage.
